Anyone been finding S mint ATBs for circulation? I haven't found any and I do look a lot. Am I confused on the circulation strikes? Do tell. Thanks in advance.

so you have a 2012 S mint circulation strike? that's what I'm talking about. did you find it in pocket change or some other way or did you buy it? I don't think i'll be finding one in circulation any time soon, I barely ever find any D's here in NY, let alone a S.

S minted ATB's were released by the mint for collector's only. They are struck in circulation quality the same as the P and D ATBs, they just are not released into circulation. Except when people like me buy a roll and put them into circulation as a little surprise for ATB collecters. Hopefully young collectors.

the circulation strikes aren't actually released into circulation? I did not know that. I thought they were while the clad proof and silver proofs were for the collectors. now the collectors have another coin type. Geeez. Why add another collector coin? not cool

Because they could I guess. While the ATB program started in 2010, the s minted circulation (business) strikes only started in 2012. It reeks havok with everyone's collector albums.

They are not even available in the regular uncirculated sets, just in rolls ,bags and P D and S three coin cards.

Some collectors on this board bought some S rolls last year, cherry picked the best coins and spent the rest as a lark, so theoretically it's possible to find a S-mint circulation quarter, just as the occasional S-mint proof is found in change. Probably the best route is roll hunting. You might want to ask if they've found any of the S-mint '12 or '13 quarters.

i do coin roll hunt. that's how I get all my ATBs. I just always thought the circulation strikes were actually for circulation. I was shocked to find out that they weren't by denco.
unless you meant check the coin roll hunting forum?

I think you are more likely to find an S mint proof than an S mint circulation strike in change or a roll or anywhere (other than a coin dealer). In fact, they made more S mint proofs than circulation strikes. Just another gimmick by the mint. The problem is that the mintage is low for each of these (1.4 million) so I buy a couple at a premium because I have to have them. Oh well.

Quote: Why add another collector coin? Pretty sure it had something to do with the 75th anniversary of the SF mint building which is why they added those as they were doing as much S mint stuff as they can. Which of course led to more confusion as it wasnt clear if they would continue or not and the series had already started so they did end up being fairly low mintage compared to other things as a lot of people stayed away

wow the mintage's for these is 1.4 million, a piece I'm guessing? that's wild. very similar to the clad proofs. I'm not sure why I thought they were for circulation.

The 2012-up S-mint "circulation finish" Quarters tend to be higher-grade than true P & D business strike coins. They are most likely struck in a manner similar to P & D Uncirculated Mint Set coins. Quote: cherry picked the best coins and spent the rest as a lark Since they weren't handled in the "Uncirculated Mint Set" manner after striking, those who open "circulation finish" S-mint rolls/bags will find a few coins with disfiguring bag marks or even planchet rinse spots, and spending those culls is relatively easy to justify. (If anyone finds a 2012-S Hawaii Volcanos with a big planchet rinse spot right beside Washington's nose, well that was just one example!) Many JFK collectors open NIFC rolls and dump the culls into circulation. Statistically speaking, you're much more likely to find an S-mint Clad Proof Quarter in circulation than one of the "circulation finish S-mint" Quarters. I have four impaired Proof State Quarters (all received in change from retail transactions) filling the extra spaces in my Dansco 7146.

I wouldn't expect to find any in circulation, the odds are pretty slim!

I'm in South Carolina. Yellowstone is the only D mint Quarter I have found in change since the 2009 DC & Territorials. The 2011's are scarce here. I have found more Hawaii P's than 2011's combined. I haven't found a 2013-D Dime yet. It takes the Denver coins a few years to get to me for some reason. By the way, where are the 2013 Jeffersons. I haven't found a P or D yet and they are my favorites.
