Silver has been in a downtrend since it peaked in 2011. Why? My opinion - the world economy is improving and big investors are moving their money from gold and silver back into stocks. The same thing happened after the big spike in the late 70's / early 80's. The following chart says it all really. Note that the chart ends in 2012 and doesn't include the massive drop so far this year.

The next time there is a massive global recession. Last time the price dropped and stayed down for 20 years.

JSH - what happened in the 70's with silver was a bit more unique than the economy... the Koch brothers happened. I don't buy into the improved economy theory yet - in fact most numbers are still really mixed and I work in an industry that needs growth to improve and we aren't seeing it at all - it is still flat.

yes stock are doing well. Interest rates are down and inflation hasn't reared it's ugly head. Once the opposite happens, precious metals will go up.

Yes, the Hunt brother's happened and added to the spike. The chart I posted is not adjusted for inflation. If you adjust for inflation the $50 silver spot price in 1980 would be $141 per oz today.
