Spengler & Sayles Type 40 Obv. Helios Rev. 5 line legend citing Caliph al-Nasr and Ayyubid overlord al-Adil 596-637 H If the weight is around 6g then it's a half "dirhem" Nice one. I like the Artuquid pictoral coins. Have a few myself.
Interesting how an early Islamic coin had a portrait--when that was generally prohibited in the Islamic world. It almost looks like some Greek influence, I can almost imaging a portrait of Apollo or Helios.
According to the Koran only gold and silver are "money." The prohibition on having portraits only applied to silver and gold. Bronze/copper was not considered "money" but rather functioned as sort of a token for small transactions. The prohibition did not apply to bronze/copper. The Artuqids and Zengids had whole series based on classical numismatic designs from the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines.
