I saw on ebay that a seller was selling an NGC graded quarter that I also have, the exact coin and grade. In the description he wrote that the coin was a POP 13. His is early releases though whereas mine is not. So my question is what does that mean. I'm sure this is a dumb question that is easily searchable, but I'd prefer an answer from people that could better explain it. Thanks

It refers to the number that have been certified at that grade. It's short for population.

NEVER believe what an ebay seller says in there ad. There is no perjury or false advertising or what have you penalty on ebay.

Is there a way to actually know the population then? or find out?

Yes just type in the cert number on the PCGS or NGC website depending on who graded it and it will tell you the pop for that grade
The vast majority of sellers wont lie about that its to easy to look up. Sometimes some will get added after the listing so it may not be 100 percent dead on since theres no way to know what theyre grading when

You can find ones for the higher grades and use that same trick if youre ever curious how many are graded higher as well

Quote: thanks basebal, the pop for the coin I was talking about says POP 17 on NGC site. Cool to know. They probably have different POP numbers for the regular coins, like yours, and the early release, (And possibly other specialty labels) so there are 17 of yours in that grade and 13 of his so there are at least 30 pieces at that grade level.

Is a population of 30 for that grade, even if only just by NGC and not total TPGs, a lot or a big population?

If you're talking about National Parks quarters, 30 is a low population.

Yeah sodude, I'm talking about my NGC ms 68 P- Hawaii Volcanoes which the site said had a 17 POP. There were other ATB's graded on the site with populations of like 2-8 so that's why I was wondering. Thanks.
