I soaked this coin in acetone. It was covered in black stuff and the upper left corner had gunk on it. It uncovered this red spot. What is it? Toning? I think it needs another soak.

I notice that there is a small green patch next to it.

I am guessing at a complex double salt of silver and copper. If it is, then further soaking with acetone wiil not have any further beneficial effect, because what you see is not organic.

Nevertheless, some quite interesting INorganic chemistry has been going on.

Looks like cuprous oxide, which can't be soaked off.

Here it was before, I didn't realize that the black stuff would come off, mostly concerned about the gunk covering that red spot.

You see, that's the value of acetone. You just increased the value by 24 cents!

Alchemy is true! I will be rich! A soak in Acetone increases the face value by 25x, and changes the metal to something more valuable. I just started soaking a big pile of silver dimes. Tomorrow they will be $2.5 gold pieces.

In all seriousness, I unfortunately have to agree that the green and red is probably some level of corrosion and not organic deposits.

I posted the wrong picture. The large cent didn't turn into a Barber quarter.
