This listing, on ebay, read as follows: "1882 Gold $5 & 1909D $5 Gold Indian Head Half Eagle Coins" http://www.ebay.com/itm/1882-Gold-5...tml%3F_from=I'm quite certain that is a 1909O, looks like the buyer got a good deal, BUT.....what is that purple, blue and green junk on the reverse? I have no idea what so ever what the colors on the reverse are... But it sure does look like an "O" to me as well. Good eye on catching that!

i wonder if that is just gunk from how it was stored or a chemical reaction from something it was cleaned with or just came in contact with. its nasty looking. It's not going to slab problem free, no?

That's....incomprehensible. They "made" a five-figure coin out of that?

The pictures on the NGC site are worthless for judging the coin. (Even after enlarging the NGC images I still have to enlarge the screen image 400% to get a poor image of the coin.) So I examine the enlarged ebay images and I would say that it would be an AU 50 sharpness, but I would call it a details coin for all the scratches in front of the face and around Pluribus Unum on the reverse. If I was net grading it I'd call it a 40.

I agree. I also don't like that big streak of discoloration on the reverse. I don't believe they can be copper spots as the discoloration is too wide spread and the colors are not typical. I believe they are from a chemical reaction which ruined the coin.

The 1909-O is what everyone was bidding on.

I was thinking XF-45 on that Indian, but I'm still just a beginner at grading.
