I recently picked up this 1921 Peace dollar, and I would like to have some opinions on its grade. I am thinking it is AU50, however it might be cleaned? What are your thoughts?
It looks nice, especially on the reverse with little wear on the eagle. The obverse looks a little worn with the hair lines looking a little smooth. I think its a close AU. As far as cleaning, I've never been good at telling that very well. Very nice coin though.
Would have to see different photos as to weather or not I could give an opinion on cleaning but other than that it's a nice Peace dollar worthy of keeping. Almost looks toned to me but that could be the lighting.
Based on the reverse, it appears AU. The high relief Peace dollars frequently were not fully struck. This may explain much of the flatness in the central part of the hair. The upper part of the hair looks slightly worn -- perhaps enough to knock it down to EF.
I don't know if it's *quite* AU. Possibly. The crud around the 1 in the date - and the discoloration in the center of the reverse - gives me cause to worry about the authenticity of the surfaces. All the same, it's a 1921 Peace....
