I have a couple Whitman folders, one with wheaties and one with Canadian pennies and I was wondering:
1. IF I were to clean them, would an acetone dip be best?
2. Would a dip HARM the pennies physically?
3. How much would a dip treatment kill the collector value of the coins?
Thanks in advance!

Acetone dips arent considered cleaning as long as you dont over dip them. As for if its safe for not on pennies I'm not sure as I've never done it, but acetone is considered an acceptable thing to use on coins

Acetone is ok to use on pennies. Have done this to a number of them. Do an acetone search here CCF to learn more.

Quote: Acetone is ok to use on pennies. Have done this to a number of them. Do an acetone search here CCF to learn more. The important question is not, "Will acetone hurt my coins?" It's, "Do my coins have anything on them that acetone will help?" If your coins have been sitting in an album, the almost-certain answer is, "No, acetone will do you no good." If your coins have acquired color/patina/toning/tarnish (choose the term you prefer; they all mean the same thing) in the album and that's what you're looking to remove, you cannot accomplish this without completely destroying their value.

S Dave. You didn't notice he said FOLDERS, not ALBUMS. GoldRush, If you stick around here more you would hear lots of bad things about Folders. And the older Whitman ones especially. As to cleaning, as already noted do a Search with the Search tab for Acetone, coin cleaning, cleaning coins. As to those Folders, your best bet is to start by removing all coins from any Folders and, unfortuately, spend the money on an Album. Folders allow air, moisture, spit, fingers, dirt and almost anything to get to your coins. And you only see one side. The back is subject to the glues from the manufacturing process. If Acetone does not help, don't do any further cleaning on coins.

Thanks all!
Thanks for the idea about the album, Carl.
Mostly, what I'm looking to remove isn't patina, but rather oxidation/gummy substances/adhesives.
