Just wondering what people think of the Spencer Clark fractional notes?

I have been collecting coins on and off for years but not paper money.

I have been considering starting this other collection with the Spencer Clark notes. They seem reasonably priced, I see the four varieties under $200 in really good shape and the run was only a few years from 64-69 so I think I could complete the series.

Any tips, concerns or any input on these fractional notes would be appreciated.

They should be easy to find and complete as a set. Most fractional collectors don't specialize with such a narrow focus but everybody collects what they like. There are 4 varieties listed for Clark notes, 2 red back and 2 green backs. They were printed in sheets of 20 with the left hand row of notes having a position indicator "a" printed next to the edge. So you have a red or green back note with or without an "a" for a total of 4 notes. The red backs are the scarcer of the 2 and will be reflected by higher prices. Whether or not you want certified pieces is up to you but take into consideration that fractional collectors are notorious for being picky on grading. If you just want nice looking presentable pieces they are easy to find. I would certainly try to examine possible purchases in person as repairs and doctoring is not uncommon with fractional pieces. The bible for Fractional Currency is Rob Kravitz book "A Collectors Guide to Postage and Fractional Currency". It was just released in an updated second edition. There is also a group of collectors that specialize in fractional named the Fractional Currency Collectors Board and they put out a newsletter plus hold an annual meeting at the Memphis International Paper Money Show. They are an excellent source of fractional info. Good Luck!

This is why I love this site.

Thanks Jim, for taking the time to reply, thanks for your insight, and thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

100% useful advice to help me make a better decision in investing in fractional notes, thanks again.
