I cannot find if this was brought up or not here. Saw this the other day, didn't bid of course. We have several from this series (no proofs) but I don't know enough to say if this was fake or not. Any thoughts from the experts. http://www.ebay.com/itm/very-RARE-1...p=true&rt=nc

I don't think it's fake, but it looks more like a circulated, polished Business Strike than a Proof to me.

thank you Superdave, Now though, I feel we should have bid on it looking at FMV. Selling at $500 seems to have been great providing the authenticity.

Quote: Selling at $500 seems to have been great providing the authenticity. Great for the seller. For the buyer, not so much. In that grade it would need to be original surfaces to warrant the price, although it might be justifiable if it's an impaired Proof. Somebody took a chance. Don't look at the pricelist; look at what they actually sell for.

Thank you again, Superdave. I'm fairly cautious buying anyway and if it's something this high I will be posting my intentions here for advice prior.

Didn't know CC made proofs.
The auction title, writing in photos, and description all say CC proof but there is no mintmark on the coin.

It didn't even occur to me on the MM. Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Well, at least I didn't throw $500 on that. I'll keep watching the feedback to see what the buyer has to say. I'm no expert but I thought ALL proofs outside of Phil. had MM on the coins.

Odd... when you click on that last bit of the link with the numbers it brings you to an ebay ad of an 1875 cc 20 cent piece that sold for 200 and something. I was really confused with your posts until I clicked on the left side

This is a tough one. I definitely believe the coin is genuine, but the seller posted such horrible pictures, it is tough to say. He may have cost himself several hundreds of dollars with those pics. I think the whole 'CC' issue was a simple, yet inexcusable, error. The coin may be a proof. The details do look pretty strong and the rims look proof-like to me. The fields look somewhat right for a lightly circulated proof from that era. I don't really like the devices, but it could just be the pics. If the coin is a high AU proof, the buyer did alright. If the coin has been polished, business strike or proof, the buyer over-payed, yet not obscenely so. It's not like this coin would be worth 100 or less in that situation. $500 would represent about one standard deviation over market value.
