Imgur album link.

Haven't cleaned most of the other side yet; the parts that I have cleaned are worn and illegible.

Came in a lot of "Spanish found Coppers" from dirtyoldcoins, other coins in the lot included 1830s 4 maravedis, a dinero de aragon and a blanca of reyes catolicos. (Just to help pinpoint the location the coin was lost in antiquity)

Slightly concave
Highly irregular planchet

Please ask for any more information that will help!

Edit: That stuff at the top... Is it Arabic text, or is it an elephant facing left with perhaps a saddle and maybe a stirrup? I am starting to think it's an elephant.

Looks like an Ayyubid fals, but hard to tell - very poorly preserved. Would need the other side to tell for sure.

Thanks a lot - I'll try looking at Ayyubid faluses (falii? fallodes?) to see if I can spot any that are similar.

I am continiously working on the other side, and I am starting to bring out some legible detail! I promise to post a picture of the reverse once it's clean enough to actually read a single word.

Plural is also fals, or you could just say fulus.
Paul Balog, Coinage of the Ayyubids is the standard reference on these. The internet has a lot of garbage references on Ayyubid copper so use Balog. Available from the ANA library for loan or copies can be found at around $35.

Thanks for the reference!

Using internet resources, I feel I have matched part of the coin's inscription to a coin of Al Awhad Ayyub, 1199 or 1200 to 1210 AD.

Here is the text in question, do you agree it is the same, although with minor style variations etc?
