So I found this penny in my attic, and it was in an envelope that said "Save this penny". My question is its significance, and or if the penny had been replace and the original taken out.I can take more detailed pictures if it turns out to be worthwhile.

Other than the post-mint damage that flattened the left side loops of the 8 in the date, it appears to be a perfectly normal 1968 cent. Perhaps someone thought that damage was an error?

There is nothing significant about a 1968 Lincoln Cent. The only reason that anyone would want to save it, is if it is a double die. A doubling of the date or the writing on the coin. For that you need better up close photos of the datre and lettering.

Perhaps it had some sentimental value to whoever wrote that?

Doesn't appear to be anything special about it. However, since it is only a penny I would save it as the envelop says and not risk angering whoever put that there. No need cursing yourself over one cent!
