I saw an item that was listed for $22.99 BIN or best offer. I offered $18 thinking that the seller would either counter or turn it down. They turned it down so I re offered $20. They turned that down too with no counteroffer. What gives? It's not like I was asking to buy it for half of what he was asking.

I've had it happen as well.. Actually once I've offered .25 cents less (with my third offer) than the buy it now and it was denied.. I think some people put a best offer option hoping it will generate more interest, or to get people hooked on the item with absolutely no intents on ever accepting under the listed buy it now price. Kind of bull.. If they have no intent on accepting an offer they shouldn't advertise as such, but what can you do?

How long has the item been listed?
He may also have an offer of 22 sitting in his in-box and he's waiting (I think you have 2 days to respond to an offer) to see if someone buys it for the full price?

I think it's only been up a few days. They turned down my first offer the next morning and the second one right away. I've also had people counter at a penny below the full price.

I think Nathan hit it on the head theyre hoping someone buys it for full price after having their best offer rejected. I dont understand why a seller wouldnt counter any offer since all that matters is getting to an agreeable price not how you get there, plus it takes 30 seconds. If you arent willing to entertain offers remove the option imo

So not to threadjack, but funny story... I saw a coin I wanted that was priced $160 or best offer. The coin greysheets for $130/$140 (bid/ask), so I put out an offer at $140. They counter at $150. Since it's free shipping, I accept. The coin arrives, and the seller also runs a brick-and-mortar store and it still has the $149 price tag. So considering PayPal/ebay fees and shipping, that's probably the cheapest he was gonna let that go.

That sounds like how it should work. In my opinion, if you aren't prepared to entertain offers 10 or 20% under asking, you shouldn't offer best offer.

Yes, if they were serious about accepting an offer, they would counter. I just offered someone $13 for a lot of V nickels listed at $16 and they accepted. I always counter serious offers. I only directly decline an offer if it was a ridiculous one like below melt value with free shipping. I counter all the time. I know people do it for entertainment when they counter for 25 cent less than my counter offer. If my price is firm, and low as it is, I simply do not check the "allow offers" check box. A seller on ebay has to deal with fees, but a B&M owner has to deal with paying to keep the shop open. |

I emailed the seller and they replied that I could have the coin for $22, but no 14 day return policy. 99 cent discount. Wow.

ebay also has a reject all offers below a certain amount, so the seller does not have to do anything below that predetermined amount and the potential buyer knows right away that their offer was declined.

These were all manual rejections. In my opinion, if you are only willing to do a 4% discount, don't list as best offer.

That ones my pet peeve. Some of them set the margin so tight for the automatic rejects there was no reason to even allow it in the first place. |

Agreed, don't list BIN, just reduce to the price you want to sell at if that is how you are going to be. I fully expect offers at 75-90% on best offer all day long. The low ballers are auto declined.

I have had this happen to me many times. I even made contact with the ebay seller to ask why he listed a "make and offer" option. His response was that he did not know how to take it off. It was on all of his 320 listings of coins and currency. Seemed a bit sketchy. I have seen this on multiple occasions though. |

Don't offer best offer if you aren't willing to accept 5% or more off your list price. Been rejected multiple times on best offers that were highly reasonable such as $17 offers on $20 BIN prices.
