Picked this up in a local dealer's scratchtray down here in Oz for a couple of bucks, adding another one to my Canadian medals and medallions collection. It's got Pierre Trudeau's name and portrait and the date 1968 on one side, and a line-drawing of the Canadian parliament building on the other.

It appears to be either made of zinc or has a zinc coating over some other cheap alloy - it "tinks" rather than "rings" when you tap it. The scan definitely looks better than a photo would - the zinc has gone all streaky, so much that you can barely make out the design when holding it in hand.

Does anyone know the story behind this? Is it a political item, or part of a set of medals for "Canadian PMs"?

This was part of a set Canadian Prime Ministers that were given out with a fill up of gasoline (SHELL I believe) in the early 1970's. Trudeau was PM at the time so you have the last one of the set. There was also a set of 12 medals which had the emblem of each province and territory on one side with the corresponding provincial/territorial flower on the other side.

Here is 12 of the 15 medals of the set

Not sure if this is the right place for this post but I thought that those of you interested in Canadian medals might be interested in this one issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Mations (F.A.O.) in 1999.

The medal was produced in gold. silver and bronze versions.

I attach a copy of the medal and and reproduce herewith the English version of the text of the certificate of guarantee that was issued with the medal.

The Right Honourable
Jean Chretien
Prime Minister of Canada

In 1999, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations minted this "Agricola" Medal in honour of The Right Honourable Jean Chretien, Prime Minister of Canada, in recognition of his commitment and activity in fostering development of the agricultural sector and defending the interests of farmers and the rural population both in Canada and around the world. It is also awarded to him for his longstanding concern with the problem of world hunger and his relentless efforts to increase international cooperation in order to assist developing countries and thus bring about a more just world, a world of greater human solidarity and greater respect for the environment. By presenting this medal to The Right Honourable Jean Chretien, FAO also wishes to acknowledge with gratitude Canada's unswerving and continued support to the Organization's activities in this area.

The observe of the medal bears a portrait of the Right Honourable Chretien, while the reverse side bears an image of the earth surrounded by symbols of wheat, water, fish and trees, which represent global food production as a means of allowing nations to overcome hunger and poverty, with the text "Working Together - Pour un monde meilleur" engraved around it. The medal is the work of the Canadian design company "Aerographics Creative Services".
