So I was browsing ancient coins, just looking around, flipped through the online catalog for this auction. Wrote down the numbers of some coins I thought would be nice to own.

Guess I have good taste... my favorites were estimated at $75,000 and $80,000. Most of the 25 I noted were in the multi thousand dollar range.

I would like a Corinth stater with Athena and Pegasus and there were a couple of those estimated at less than $1000. Maybe I'll try for one.

Yikes! That is a little pricey! I can't imagine ever having that much money for a coin. I barely can scrape together 50+ for a coin. The GF is generally good with the coins if they stay under the $50 range and I don't get too many. I have bought a lot recently though so I have to back off a bit. It was all part of the strategy though she doesn't like that I seem to have a constant flow of coins coming in. So now if I save up and buy 1 $100 coin it will seem like I am spending that much less compared to 6 coins with a combined total of $50. Shh don't tell her.

I would love to attend one of these auctions, I couldn't afford to buy anything but still it would be fun and a learning experience. For many years I was an Asian Art dealer specializing in Japanese Swords and Woodblock Prints. I bought and sold at auctions many times. Sadly prices soared to where I couldn't keep up the larger dealers so I gave up the business. If you have never attended an auction you should, they are great place to meet people with the same interests and learn.

The RCNA convention is in Winnipeg this year and while I am tempted to attend the auction my interests really don't lie in Canadian coins. I mean I like them sure but I am not going to shell out any form of big money for an MS 60+ whatever. Besides that I don't see there being many ancient coin collectors here. Who knows I may be surprised but a lot of people here, especially in the southern area, tend to ignore the fact that history has happened and change is occurring.

Jeeze Ski, where have you been my whole life? I wish I knew there was a blade expert I could contact. I have been close a few times to buying an authentic blade. I have always been frightened by the prices. A few years ago I did the next best thing. I ordered an Oniyuri Bujikan shinobigata katana. Forged in 9260 carbon spring steel full tang. It differs from the traditional blades in that it is shorter than the scabbard, and the handle is 14" giving the illusion that it is a full size blade, when its actually a quick draw. Next time I see an antique blade in shooting you a line. I hope you can read Japanese because my hiragana and Katakana are ok but Kanji- forget it.

What do you think of this Athena/Pegasus stater? (it's from Heritage, not HJB) Silenus is doing the ancient version of a photo bomb I like it. I've been keeping an eye out for an Athena/Pegasus and this could be a good deal.

Quote:
CORINTHIA. Corinth. Ca. 345-307 BC. AR stater (8.65 gm). Pegasus flying left, kappa below / Helmeted head of Athena left wearing necklace; head of Silenus behind. Ravel 1046. Calciati 408. Scarce variety! Good Very Fine.

That is a cool coin, if you can afford it then I would go for it. I have always found the corinth pegasus staters to be particularly attractive. There are so many different controls and varieties that you could focus your entire collection on them easily. There is a decent website here created by someone who has http://www.corinthstaters.com/

I have just the one in my collection, Calciati 494. Unfortunately the reverse is a bit porous and Calciati describes it as an imitative type - the helmet is too small for Athenas head.

I bought it! I'm happy with the hammer price. I like it as much or more than the two I was eyeing in the HJB auction.

I bought a Corinth pegasus stater for my brother 5-10 years ago (it was mounted as a pendant) and he loves it. I've always wanted one for myself. I've kept a lookout for one that appeals to me for the last few months and this one has great appeal.

Thanks for the link, Jimbo777-- I hadn't come across that site. Reading it now.

I'm going to make a mold from it and cast one to wear as a pendant-- don't want to compromise the real coin by turning it into jewelry.

Maybe I'll make a wax from the mold and try a few variations just for fun. Perhaps get rid of the drunken sot and put some other emblem or symbol there, or something creative. Just for fun :)

The coin is over the top FUN. I would have got it myself.

I have only one Corinth Stater, its not great but its still nice and was authentic and in my price range (sub $200) when I got it.

The device on mine is an ancient gambling piece.
