1st post and already asking questions
I'm looking at a 1925 $20 St Gaudens in MS66 and the price difference between PCGS at $3800 and NGC at $3090 seems too great for a mild difference of opinion.

What gives ?

I dont know those prices off the top of my head but in general PCGS coins do sell for a premium over NGC coins. If those are completed ebay listings youre seeing that difference in than thats the premium the markets given it.

Also consider though that no two coins are alike even in the same grade. Some will have great eye appeal and get a premium and others wont be as good and sell for lower.

When looking at PCGS and NGC prices for any given grade are they based on auction prices realized, private party sales records or their estimation of what a coin in that grade is worth. As mentioned above does one have better eye appeal, or does one have a CAC sticker are also things which will affect value.

I am not sure exactly where the figures came from but looking at auction archives show both PCGS and NGC certified examples selling roughly for the same price, about $2800 give or take a few hundred which could be explained away by differences in eye appeal.

Though there are plenty of exceptions, PCGS coins appear to have a tendency to sell for more than NGC coins and this seems to be more and more noticeable in grades approaching the finest known for a coin. On Heritage the most recent 9 1925 $20 St. Gaudens in MS-67(which is the finest certified) included 3 PCGS and 6 NGC. The 3 PCGS averaged roughly $30k while the NGC coins were more in in the $10-14k range with the exception of one which sold for about $25k.

I think the registry sets is an important factor in the price differences. NGC allows both in their registry sets while PCGS only allows their own which creates increased demand for PCGS slabs from those who are doing a PCGS registry set and don't want to deal with crossovers.

I agree, I do think thats definitely part of it. Theres some exceptions to this as well but for the most part the highest graded PCGS coins almost always have a lower population than the NGC counter part. Sometimes NGC even has a grade higher than PCGS does as a top grade which I believe is the other major factor driving the premium. There could be more too it but I think what you mentioned and the PCGS coins generally have a lower population at those levels are the major reasons for it
