Saw this coin being discussed elsewhere as an potential fake and wanted to get the opinions of the experts here. Personally my gut feeling is that there are some things about this coin that are a little off and I'm leaning towards this being a fake.

What do you think?

If not a cast counterfeit, the only thing I might think would make the reverse look like that is if it were polished within an inch of its life (rounding off the edges), then retoned.
That said, I don't think the obverse fits any of the 14 die varieties for 1833.

I agree as I can't match the obverse to any known variety.

I don't like it. The details look mushy. The letters RICA and the top arrow appear sunken.

Indeed, this is a fake. The date is wrong and the reverse has been artificially toned to cover up the weak strike.

Good job getting it taken down! :-)

Unfortunately I think it sold. Hopefully the buyer will recognize that it is fake and will request a refund. I just wanted to post this to show that there are some moderately deceiving fake Capped Bust Halves out there and that one needs to utilize extreme caution when buying online.

Looks a little 'sus', but I wouldn't completely condemn it from the picture only.
I would not buy this piece from ebay, because for me, I would like to really have the coin in hand in the first place.

I think once ebay removes the item, it redirects to some random thing.

The item did sell.

Very interesting. I can find it in completed listings but when you click on the item it now takes you to Half Cents. Is this just a glitch on ebay or has someone figured out how to cover their tracks? My IT network security training always makes me suspicious...

Just a bit more information before we put this discussion to bed. The seller responded again and I think he had no idea that the coin was a fake.
