I've been told on another forum that this token is U.S. military issue for the Owl & Stork Club, Danang, Vietnam. At 18mm, 2.1gr it's thought to be either a 5¢ or 10¢ value.
Silvered or nickel plated brass.
And the bird is supposedly a heron

Here is one with most of the plating on it. The photo stream only managed to get one picture through before it backed up and slowed down.

What you were told is what it could be. I was told it might be a Magicians coin, but I have never seen one like it.
Hopefully somebody may know.
