I have collected a few modern coins, mostly silver Canadian. Recently I decided to try going after ancient coins. I bought a few off of what seemed to be a reputable seller, but I have no experience, so who knows.

So if anyone has time to take a look at this coin I've uploaded, it would be greatly appreciated. I didn't pay much, $7. The coin is supposed to be a Roman "Theodosius". Made of Bronze. 21mm and weighs 4.04g.

Later I realized I should have done a bit more research, and if this turns up fake, well, that's why I started cheap and didn't buy very many.

Thanks in advance.

Its real and its nice - at this point, coinage started shrinking away to little more than a dot with a crude bust. This is among the last large coins issued by Rome.

It is indeed Theodosius, minted in Alexandria (mint mark ALEA).

Heres the full ID if you want to keep the info:
Theodosius I
DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG
Pearl Diademed, Draped, Cuirassed
GLORIA-ROMANORVM (Glory of the Romans)
ALEA
Alexandria
REFERENCE ID: RIC IX Alexandria 21a
Rated Scarce
Size: AE2
Minted: 392-395 ACE

Welcome to ancients! PM me if you're after any more copper coins (especially late ones like this) and I'll see what I can do. and if you are ever worried about getting a fake, you can run it past basically anyone here and get a free impartial opinion.

You did very well for your first coin. A nice example of Theodosius I from the Alexandra mint. I hope this has sparked your interest in ancients and we will see you here often. There are a lot of folks here that will be more than happy to help you learn about these coins.

Very nice first coin. Back in '99 similar to you I selected a late Roman bronze as my first coin. I knew next to nothing about coins, then I found out who the ruler was on my coin. I was thrilled! The emperor was Arcadius. That's when I discovered I knew even less than I thought. My friend if you decide that you want to collect ancients, then it's a tough road to follow. Man its a lot of coins. Yours is very nice, a good choice.
Also understand there is a point when coins stop being coins and become the fine art left over from antiquity.

I have a website on coins of this time period:
http://esty.ancients.info/ricix/

It is type 41 on that webpage.
Your coin looks perfectly genuine to me.
It was minted in Roman Alexandria, Egypt.

CD: to the CCF!
Very nice and inexpensive introduction into the realm of Roman numismatics.

Roman coins can be quite pricey, but if you stick in the area of late Roman as this coin is, for a while, it won't cost you much while your learning curve is steep.

Late Roman Bronzes (LRB's) are the ancient equivalent of LWC's (Lincoln Wheat Cents). Have fun!

I really like that comparison sel I am going to have to start using that when describing why LRB's are so cheap to my friends.
