This is a recent pick up. I have owned very few of this type. I think its grades xf/au but has had a cleaning at some point.

Any help with the Overton variety is appreciated!

I believe it is the SQ based 2, small 8's and Large letters? I went back and checked other threads and the T/I relationship appears to be to the left. That's where I get lost...it says 0-116...0-121?

Your thoughts on Grade, and how bad the cleaning was.
I await the experts!

This attribution is a tricky one. IMO, you have it narrowed down to the correct 2 possibilities. Unfortunately, the reverse die is the same for both the possibilities.

That only allows the obverse to differentiate this coin.

So... on the Obverse of O-115 and 116 (Obverse die 9), the #13 star just about touches Liberty's hair. I see more room than that on your coin so... I'm tentatively going with an attribution of O-121 R3+.

Grade: AU-50 details, cleaned.

unfortunately that cleaning hurts it but EF details to my eye. It's a kind of a flat looking strike and I think this series is known for weaker strikes. I read the expert graders of this series on this forum and look to the various hair features and the clasp of the obverse.

The clasp looks like it might have some wear on it so it might not quite make AU. I'd like to hear more seasoned professionals on this series comment on that for this coin myself.

There are 23 varieties in 1828 but I think the correct variety is O-117 R1. Among other details the "C" of 50C is recut at the top.
