I have just bought a coin that was cleaned at some time. It was one I wanted so I was not too unhappy about the cleaning, however my question is this is there safe easy good way to get the toning back? I don't suppose it will ever look at its best, but can it be toned down? Geoff.
Atmospheric pollution will sometimes work for copper or bronze coins. On a secure window ledge hgh above a busy road perhaps. For silver, some suggest placing in a brown paper bag for a year or so. These ideas may or may not work, but either way they won't eliminate hair lines.
Might sound odd, but if the windowsill is covered in bird...uh, excrement, then all the better. The ammonia will accelerate toning (but dont go dipping it in ammonia or you could get season cracking).
