I had a look for acetone - couldnt find it. The people I asked looked at me like I was some sort of terrorist. Perhaps its my age.

Apparently, boots stocks it.

And number 2, I've been using white spirit to good effect.

I have found acetone at the local hardware store in the section with turpentine and paint thinner.

Pure ethanol or isopropyl alcohol (pure rubbing alcohol) will probably be the most similar to acetone. Some people use xylene, which will behave a little differently.

Straight acetone can be found at your local Walmart, in the paint section right next to/under the paint thinner.

What kind of cleaning are you hoping to do? It works pretty good for removing sticky residue, glue etc... And is not harmful to the coin. But will not remove toning/tarnish, environmental damage and other things, it's more so for gunk and stickey crap.

Search acetone on the search tab for this forum and there's many topics about it.

Don't know if there are Walmarts for DaytR in the UK. At least, there won't be if God is truly an Englishman.

Ethanol and Isopropyl alcohol are both chemically very similar to Acetone. I personally use isopropyl alcohol as I'm quite lucky to have a friend who is a printer engineer and he uses it to clean printer heads. You can get pure acetone off Amazon UK under nail varnish remover.(make sure its PURE acetone though as some are a scented and have other chemicals in them.)

I did try posting a link to a product however it didn't work. the is a brand called 'Nail Perfection' which sell pure acetone in 500ml bottles for £6.75.

A fella on ebay sells acetone much cheaper - 1L for £9.95. Free postage. Check it out.

You can get all sorts of chemicals on ebay...try some Sodium Acetate Trihydrate - its the stuff from handwarmers.
