Hi AuldFartte, I get a kick out of you nickname! Is that the "Victorian" version? The Florin is very neat. I love the "cameo" date. Is this a proof coin? It appears to be struck sharply. What does one of these sell for these days? Mike

Hi, Nice example (my favourite Pre decimal)

The book value (McDonals) has the following $A values:

Very good ($6) fine ($9) very fine ($20) extra fine ($55) AUnc ($110) Unc ($190) Choice Unc ($375) Gem Unc ($625) Proof ($19K)

They can be found in some dealers for much cheaper. For example, VF for 5-10 each. A good example will show less wear, and up to four lines to identify the steps of the old parliament house in Canberra.

Incidently, the 1997 subscription silver proof $1 was minted for the 70th anniversary of the building's opening.

Nice coin Auld Fartte...you are now the proud owner of one of the four commemorative Florins minted. Of the four, the one that is coveted by Aussie predecimal collectors is this one....

Melbourne Centenary Florin Obverse

Melbourne Centenary Florin Reverse

75,000 of this coin was minted of which 21,000 unsold coins during those hard years were melted down.

Price wise, this coin ranges from AUD $150 in very good condition to AUD$20,000 in Proof condition.

Yep, it's the Olde English or Victorian version !!! Thanks
The Florin is just an UNC (choice, maybe ... I don't know about "gem", though) and is a real nice strike. I haven't seen any in as nice condition as this one that has sold in the past couple of years, so I don't know about recent sale prices.

And, lim118 ... The Melbourne is certainly on my want list, but way out of my price range right now as I really want EF or better

The EF and aUNc grades (Melbourne Centenary Florin) are selling of late around the AUD$300+ mark and around the AUD$500+ for an UNC one. Any grades higher, that is when you will have to outlay a fair amount of dollars to acquire them.

I take it you are aware of the other two commemorative florins. They are both very nice and very affordable even in a GEM UNC grade.
