Hi,

I was looking through an old roll or 1964 nickels and found 17 of the coins in the roll had this raised marking. Thought it was a scratch at first but it's a raised section that intersects a dentils, stops, then continues out the other side to the next denticle. I was excited at first but then found the same "error" on 22 coins in a different spot when going through a roll of 1973 quarters.

What would cause this mark during the minting process? Is there a specific term for this and is this a common occurrence. Also, are there people that collect these sorts of coins?

Sorry for the bad quality photo, used a cheap Walmart camera:)

Thanks all:)

Thanks Kuh, yes they look like die cracks. Are there collectors for these types of error coins or does that take away from the value of a coin?

Could be a "tooling mark" if it has no effect on the denticle.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Tool mark. They don't command much of a premium, but some people do collect them if they're into the minor varieties.
