Hi,

I was looking through an old roll or 1964 nickels and found 17 of the coins in the roll had this raised marking. Thought it was a scratch at first but it's a raised section that intersects a dentils, stops, then continues out the other side to the next denticle. I was excited at first but then found the same "error" on 22 coins in a different spot when going through a roll of 1973 quarters.

What would cause this mark during the minting process? Is there a specific term for this and is this a common occurrence. Also, are there people that collect these sorts of coins?

Thanks Kuh, yes they look like die cracks. Are there collectors for these types of error coins or does that take away from the value of a coin?

Could be a "tooling mark" if it has no effect on the denticle.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Tool mark. They don't command much of a premium, but some people do collect them if they're into the minor varieties.
