Hello, I'm a 17 year old novice collector and I've searched through many rolls of pennies and nickles. But as of late, the focus of my collecting has recently changed direction to a whole new fascinating aspect of coin collecting: Silver!
I recently found a 1967 40% silver half in my change drawer at my register at work, and was overjoyed at such a simple find. I have, in the past, asked banks if they had half dollars and / or large dollar coins available as they were loading them by the fistful into bags in front of me, but they simply denied me and told me that they were sending them off to the fed. I've read around these forums for quite some time, and understand that is is possible to "order" a box of these coins.
My question is: How do I start? How do I best go about obtaining large volumes of halves to search through? Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You can get them but I have noticed I started roll hunting when I was 10 years old now I am around your age !! I would find boat loads of 40 percent halfs and walking libertys and franklins and 1964 kennedy 90 percent silver halts !! will silvers price jumps people have striped much of the silver from circulation and I find it hard to even find the 40 percent coins these days !!

Yeah sadly I'd have to agree with these two. You can go to your local bank and order a box of half dollars or simply stop by banks and ask if they have any rolls or loose you can buy. Unfortunately, you will have your work cut out for you. What you're probably going to find is, a lot of half dollars are marked because they've been searched by someone else. I know in my area, most of the ones I get have black magic marker on them. Every area is different, however. You may find that you're in a rural area where coins don't move much and the bank has been sitting on them for so long, they'll cheer when you ask for them. Or you'll be in a city area and most of what you get will be searched. It's really a crap shoot. Just prepare yourself to go through an entire box of half dollars and find nothing. If you're lucky, you'll find 1 or 2. Sometimes you can get very lucky, but don't think that's the norm. The norm is nothing, 1 or 2. If you can accept that fact, you'll be much happier as you hunt.

Yes halves are becoming more and more hard. I've never found a 90%, but have found a few 40%.
You have a good job as a cashier at least, I wish I was into collecting when I was handling that much money. Look through your register when you can. Check those dimes as they are pretty small and silver dimes are easily skipped. Maybe try and score a box of dimes to see how they play out CRH. They are much easier to get than half dollars.
My local bank never has halves either, and I hate going around to other banks to try and buy rolls because they always pressure me into signing up with them and making an acct with them.
Id also look through the bills but that's just because I've recently gotten into currency collecting too. (look for low serial #'s at least)
Good Luck!

In my limited experience, halves are way too competitive.

Don't be discouraged! Just find a bank, preferably you're own, and have them order a box a week. Keep searching, and sooner or later, you WILL find silver. There's also lots of other great coins to collect, like proofs, errors, and BU's, and NIFC's.
BU=Brilliant Uncirculated NIFC=not issued for circulation (1987,2002-present).

I have had more luck finding silver halves at gas stations than I have ever had looking through rolls. UT that's not to say I haven't found silver halves in rolls. I always ask when I go to a gas station if they have half dollars. If I get one and it's not silver, I just cash it in at the bank or at another gas station or somewhere.

Lucky you don't live in Canada. Here the The Bank of Canada is forcing all banks to sell to them any silver coinage they get for face value, then turn them into ugly NCLT trinkets and selll them for $60. Criminal in my mind. Just today I had what would have been the find of my life snatched away from literally under my nose by a greedy and spiteful teller. There is more to the story but I was denied gettting 37 silver dollars at face. I made a huge stink with the branch manager, who sadly consulted corporate and was told they are forbidden to sell them to me. So they are going to the melting pot now.
