Afternoon all,

Recently I received a coin off an auction that was supposed to be a Manual 1/2 Tetarteron. The coin I received was not the coin that was pictured. Not a huge deal seeing I didn't spend much, the seller was helpful, and will be sending me the coin I was supposed to get. Now I am just wondering, what is this one?

Thanks in advance.

David

Not an expert at identifying unknown coins.
I have seen a similar one that was a spanish maravedis.
I know it most probably isn't.
Lol do not blame me.

Well it's Byzantine. I can't make out the obverse legends on the photograph and the reverse looks obliterated, so hard to tell what mint. Busts with that style robes were used from the 8th to 13th centuries.
Definitely not a tetarteron of Manuel though. Have any better scans with the obverse legends readable?
Also would suggest moving this to the Ancients forum, more people who collect Byz. will see it there.

Thanks for the help!

I will have to try taking some better pictures, not my strongest point yet.

If a mod can move this to the ancient side that would be appreciated. I'm not sure if I can move it.

Thanks!

It's difficult to say 100% but I believe your coin is an AE half Tetarteron of John II either Sear # 1954 or 1955. That's the closest I can get without a reverse to help out.
