What is stated in the article is not new information.
The paper bills we use aren't worth the paper they are printed on.
The metal content in nickels is worth more at melt.
Same thing with lincoln cents pre-1982 and silver coinage pre-1964.

That fact is it is illegal to melt coins.
They are US legal tender.

If someone wanted to melt them down though, I wouldn't stop them.
Go ahead and make my collection go up in value. see if I care.

I understand that at the end of the different currencies and the start of the Euro all countries had a different way of getting rid of the returned coins
I understand France sold their coins to a few big scrap merchants who sold them happily for a nice profit to China
Especially those that got Nickel in them

One of my smaller clients runs a scrap business with his brother
Up to a few years ago they had to make ends meet
Now both got a brand new car
Mercedes if I remember rigth
One of them takes three vacations a year on the Canary island

Must make hay whilst the sun shines I think is the expression

Here is an interesting article on nickel. It explains the current growth in nickel pricing and discusses factors that will both drive and mitigate nickel pricing.

China needs nickel to make stainless steel
I do not think it is more complecated then that

They were/are buying aluminium in france because they did not have enough electricity to make it themselves

It's easy to get rolls of nickels at the bank - I get maybe 10 rolls every time I go. But I'm only looking for pre-1960 nickels to keep, the rest I just recycle. Buying nickels for the nickel content seems way impractical; you'd need a ton to play the increase in the commodity price of nickel. Gold's probably a better hedge, IMHO.

Let me add that I think proof nickels are maybe the best value still left out there in coin collecting. Been buying those for $3-5.

It's only illegal to melt cents and five cent pieces. Anything else you want to melt is fine. And the act that they are legal tender is of no consequece.

coins if you want to buy a lot at one time can be hard to get from the bank, but if your willing to buy a whole lot they may order you a box, all ya gotta do is ask. I'm always going threw nickels, I am determined to be able to get a full collection of Jeffersons with out paying over face value.
