I picked this little hammered coin up in some scrap silver and it has me completely baffled. It has certainly seen better days which does not help. If someone could help with identification that would be fantastic. Weight is 3.1g and it is between 16mm and 19mm across (it is not very round).

Thanks, T

Have a look at this page and see if you can match it - it looks similar to these coins.

I think it's Ghaznavid (Afghanistan/Iran), one of the yamini dirham types, I suspect. Check this zeno.ru page and you'll see many similar coins, but I can't make out enough of the script on yours to get a perfect match.

Yes Ghaznavid. The image on the right is upside down.

Amazing information and thank you. I would have never have found this out without your help (it is a bit beyond the scope of Krause) and I now have a whole new area I can learn about. Thanks again. T

No problem. Ghaznavid coinage can be fairly challenging. If you're interested in pursuing Islamic or Indian coinage pick up a copy of Mitchiner's "World of Islam" it'll pay for itself (even though there are some errors in it) it's a good comprehensive guide. And it's illustrated.
