Are the old-style 2012 loonies, the last ones before the newer laser-etched loonies, becoming a collectible? Whilst perusing ebay tonight I saw a roll of these selling for $199.95, while a roll of the new-style coins were offered for only $34.95.

That piqued my interest, so I did a bit of checking. A certain large dealer in SW Ontario offers these rolls at $139.95 and $34.95 respectively; a large Vancouver dealer has them at the same price (but is sold out of the older style).

So are they - and the corresponding toonies - scarce enough to be a decent investment?

I do not know about the rolls, so my reply will not be so helpful, but let's say for last 10 month, I didn't see any 2012 old Loonie and Toonie in the circulation. And I check every coin that get in the change.

I wouldn't pay 5-6 times face value for a roll. The one that you saw on ebay......did it have bids up to $199.95 or was that the asking price for a BIN? The reason I ask, is that anybody can ask any price that they want, whether or not they are able to sell them at that price is another thing all together.
The best way to check, would be to look at ebay completed sales and see what they have ACTUALLY sold for in the past.

2 2012 rolls sold on ebay in the last 3 months.

One for $185.00 back in May

One was listed for $195.00 and sold on July 4th at a Best Offer price (don't know what that was)

Individual coins are selling for $8.50 to $12.00 each. Average at $10.00 a coin and that would come out to $250 a roll.

I'm in Vancouver and that large dealer along with all the smaller dealers have no 2012 old style rolls.

They are harder to find in the wild. Last I remember I have 2 old-style 2012 toonies, but no loonies.
