New arrival and one of my favorites now. Not an easy one to find, and I got a deal on it IMHO.

What a lovely medallion/token, though a pity about the hole.
How much did you pay ?

Is that meant to be Hannibal Hamlin holding the wedge? It almost looks more like Stephen A. Douglas!

Pertinax - Many of these old campaign tokens were issued holed, as they were meant to be suspended from clothing. I've read that it usually has little, if any, effect on value. Most (not all) of these 1860 Rail Splitter Lincolns (not many to be found)that I've seen have been holed. I've recently begun collecting old 1800's campaign tokens, and it can be impossible to find them without a hole.
For me it adds a little provenance that someone in 1860 was actually wearing this one in support of Lincoln. The only other one I could find of this 1860 type looked like a dug coin (holed with very porous surfaces)- that one sold for $175 and I was lucky to get this one for quite a bit less than that.
publius: Yes - that's supposed to be Stephen a. Douglas holding the wedge, in a subservient position to Lincoln. Lincoln beat Douglas in the 1860 election, as well as John C Breckinridge, and John Bell, and that led to several states seceding from the union, before Lincoln was even inaugurated. The rest is history.

Thanks, all of you.
Fascinating that they had campaign badges, buttons, tokens so long ago.
I have 2 Greek ones from the 1890s.
I've not seen any British ones from the 19th century.

mackwork, Congrats on our find. Very nice . I agree that finding these types of political campaign medals is almost impossible to find /out the hole... They were made to be hung off a chain or clothing

Thanks Dave H!
Pertinax - The first presidential campaign tokens are usually recognized as being the Andrew Jackson tokens with his likeness on the obverse and the HERO OF NEW ORLEANS on the reverse - for the 1824 presidential campaign. So they go way back! I just lost a chance to get an 1824 Jackson. I started collecting these old campaign tokens as I thought it would be a low cost endeavor - as it turns out some of these can be out of my price range!

John Bell / Edward Everett 1860 Token - We inherited a very nice Bell/Everett campaign token with tin-type photos from family in Baltimore. I believe that's where the Constitutional Union Party had their campaign in 1860. Anyone have an idea of a value range for it. It is "holed" at the top.

I've added many more since my post above. One of the recent ones was an 1860 John Bell. I think I got it for about $90. There's no book of values or rarities on these old campaign tokens, and a lot depends on condition and rarity. John Bell was a tough one to find, and it sounds like yours may be a different type (different DeWitt number) than mine. Can you post a pic of yours?

Sorry to Necro your thread back up after so long, just had to say thanks. I have been trying to get details of this medal for a few days. Coin shop said dollar box repro/early 21st century. Luckily I didn't give up, found this page as well as Smithsonian piece. Thanks fo rmore info that helped me out.... I noticed the specimen at the Smithsonian is in pretty bad shape. I'd love to donate mine to them.. .but I am out of beer money and half of this is split with guy at work...
