Hi all, I have this coin/ assuming it's a coin/ and would really appreciate if someone more knowledgeable takes a peek at it, and is able to give me an idea of Time Frame/Location/Value. Thank you! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

It's Byzantine, or possibly Trapezuntine, what's called a scyphate piece for its cup-shape. Looks like "Andronicus" for the Emperor, pictured standing next to Christ on the obverse (I can't read the rest of the inscription), & Mary (Maria Theotokos, which is what the abbreviations are for) on the reverse. As I'm not a Byzantine specialist, I can't tell you more.

to the community This is a very nice billon trachy of the Byzantine emperor Andronicus I Comnenus 1183-1185, The obverse is the Virgin Mary standing holding the infant Christ. It is Sear# 1985.

Thank you very much for the information folks! I've had this coin for about 20-25 years and knew nothing about it... Would you be able to give me a circa on value, even though I doubt I'd sell it... yet! Thank you again!:)

Ok, I found a couple on ebay and they run $45-60. Mine looks a little better preserved so it's probably a bit more... but surely not worth the trade for me. :)

What people 'ask' and what they 'get' are two different things. Put some of them on a watch list and see if they sell. Of course a BIG dealer selling it and some "chump" with a feedback score of 20 will get very different results. Life isn't fair but that is reality I am afraid.
My own guestimate (Byzantine are not my forte) was $30-40

In its condition and if you were to buy it from a dealer you would probably pay between $90-$100.

My own 'guestimate' is based on ebay sales which can be very different from a coin dealer who has Persian carpets on the floor !

I agree, it's a very nice trachy and I'd be happy to own it. No idea what it is truly worth but as others have said, google recent sales.

I agree with you guys- it is a nice piece of history to own and I will be keeping it for kids and grandkids, God willing! Hopefully by then, if is to be sold, will add some digits to the number:)

WOW thats a great coin, in what I would call Superb for the type... I want one, really bad! Oh wait I just got one....thats right.. I would be very happy with your coin, as I am with mine. Which happens to be the same coin. Echizento's estimate is pretty close. I came up with about $80. What is really exceptional about your coin is the Legend....notice mine is in pretty high grade but nowhere near the amount of legend you have on yours. To have such an example there would be no amount of money someone would pay to make it worth giving it up. One of the best examples I have come across.
