I've hung on to my BU and gem BU 1964 quarters because my favorite dealer says there is no premium for such a common date, even in high grade.

I'm wondering how many of these common date coins have to be melted before they are no longer common.

Most likely a great deal more than will get done during your lifetime. Sorry I couldn't have a happier and more encouraging guess for you.

Edit: You may find more informed input on this question in the Modern US coins forum than you'll find in the PM forum...

High grade items always have some sort of premium, its just the more common they are the higher the grade needs to be. MS 66 ones carry a good premium, the problem is they have to be graded to get that premium which eats into potential gains.

I agree with freddy though I wouldnt count on them being melted to see a premium explode. Even when that does happen it usually takes quite a while (years if not longer) before the market adjusts and realizes that many have been destroyed.
