Actually I do see traces of the lines on the obverse the more I look at it.

Looks like improper alloy mixture (woody)... looks cleaned too.

Thanks chequer, this is the way I found it. You've confirmed it for me because I have a woody on ebay but its an American penny and its quite dark. This one must have been cleaned by someone else at one time.

yes at one point I found a few I thought they were just damaged,,well live and learn ,,nice one pennyman
