Bought some stuff. I've been wanting a cartwheel penny and tuppence. Well, one of them was pretty cheap, the one I know is a one penny: Heres conquest 2, a Jamaican farthing - I just like the legends: And the big lot, I'm hoping the cartwheel is a 2 pence, it looks to be bigger than the 1d, but I look forward to more input on it. Quite a pricey lot at £5.40 ($8.30 is you are that way inclined), but I'm happy: IHfPPlQ~~60_12.jpg) What do you guys think? I've hopefully got another coin coming with combined postage which is 1770s which finishes at a rather inopportune time tomorrow.

I thought the cartwheel 2d was the same size as the 1d but double-thick? Also, I see at least one French coin

Yeah, I'm not sure what the other side is, but the french coins of the period are pretty nice I reckon.
The cartwheel two pence is 6mm wider and a good bit thicker too. The rim is also a bit thinner in comparison to the coin - the ratio is different - I fancy it is here too.

I've only ever seen a cartwheel 2d by its lonesome, so I guess I shouldn't have trusted my eyes alone (it was in the Canadian National Currency Museum, which had a lovely display of the British, American and Spanish issues that circulated for centuries here).
And the French coin - from the size, it'll be 10 Centimes of Napoleon III. The series is pretty common in most of the junk bins I've seen (especially in G or worse), but I see way more 5 than 10 Cmes around.

The French coin readily circulated in the UK during the 19C as a 1d. The Cartwheel 1d is 36mm dia and 1oz the 2d is 41mm dia and 2oz. You paid top money for those coins. You should be able to get a reasonable cartwheel for little money.

Quote: The series is pretty common in most of the junk bins I've seen (especially in G or worse), but I see way more 5 than 10 Cmes around. Sure it's very common. I seem to see way more 10 than 5 though (I don't remember if I even have a 5 - though I did find a 2 and a 1 in one of the junk bins). About the cartwheels: I have a penny (worse than the OP's) that a dealer apparently specifically kept for me (I previously told him the weird backstory of these series, and essentially finished it with "but I'd never have the money to afford anything like that"; got it for 50 rubles [$1.5, or about a British pound]). Would really want a twopence, but even now doubt I'll ever see one in a similar grade, and high grade isn't going to be affordable

Look out for a Robert Blake Conder 2d - its around 1811-13ish. Same size, but often turn up pretty cheap because its not such a common series. Mines mostly readable and didnt cost much at all. Easy to get for under £10.
