Hello,

Has anyone seen or know of the attached Lombardy coin? I have attached photos from a previous forum discussion from a few years back. Any information on coin dealers (websites) specific to European coins would be greatly appreciated.

I do not know of this coin, or it's style.
That means for those who may be interested, some initial investigation is needed.

The first things I would check is a comparative ring tone against another generic Italian 5 lire silver coin, and to measure and weigh it.

I have my suspicion that it may be some sort of fantasy piece.

I would suspect it of being a political issue. The date of 1848 represents a period of revolution in Europe (the Communist Manifesto was issued in that year). The attribution to Lombardy in the first place would seem to rest entirely on the mintmark "M" for Milan ; if correct, the gibberish legends might be intended evasively, to save the creators from prosecution for treason. Lombardy & Venice were under Austrian control at the time, using the Austrian florin, & my guess is that the piece was created by Italian nationalists, based on types of the short-lived Napoleonic republics.

Here is the original archived thread where the above coin was posted.

I suppose we should first clarify: is your coin exactly like the one posted in that old thread, with the backwards, upside-down and sideways letters, or is it a genuine Lombardy 5 lire, with proper Italian legends?

If your coin is identical to the one you've linked pictures to, then it is not genuine.

My interest, which could have been better stated, is whether the one with the garbled legends is "just" a fantasy piece created by someone who liked the look of the Lombardy Provisional Gov't 5 Lire, or whether it represents an attempt by nationalists within Lombardy to keep alive the spirit of the revolutions of 1848, while avoiding prosecution with evasive legends.

Oh, for a copy of Corpus Nummorum Italicorum!
