Hi all, I've been looking at more coins again, breaking my previously unprecedented budget of so and so time and again lol here's where I stand for the moment though. I've chanced upon a 1/4 florin coin from 1861 and it has edge letterings. I can't find any information about that though. Can anybody chime in on this? Thanks!

What is the lettering?
I'd expect VIRIBUS UNITIS (with united strengths), which is the typical edge motto for coins of Francis Joseph. My Milan-mint florin of 1859 has that, as do my other non-Hungarian FJs. The Hungarians read BIZALMAM OSI ES ERENYBEN ; an Austrian type with that inscription would be a pretty nice error, but the production of Hungarian types for his reign didn't begin until 1867, so it's unlikely to find one dated 1861!

Ok... well the letterings on this coin form the words "viribvs vnitis" . I don't have any experience with this type of coin from this era, but I do have specimens from germany that do not use the archaic form of "U" so either it's a real special one or a counterfeit(please tell me it's not lol).

No, that orthography is normal. Checking my specimens, I find as follows.

1859M Florin "VIRBVS VNITIS"
1893 1 Corona "VIRIBVS VNITIS"
1908 1 Corona "VIRIBVS VNITIS"
1912 2 Coronae "VIRIBVS VNITIS"
1908 5 Coronae "VIRIBVS VNITIS"

Not really, I just have a lot of 19th century silver, & a certain fondness for Francis Joseph, King of Etcetera. It doesn't hurt that his portrait appears on a huge number of types, so a random handful of coins of that period is likely to turn up at least one with him on it. I guess he's just behind Victoria in that respect.

that's cool. I've got a 5 mark from 1876 incoming. that's a lot of silver to hold in one's hand, at least for a rookie like me lol funny you mentioned victoria since I just got a 1/2 crown. Would you be willing to have a look at the pictures of it to judge its authenticity? managed to get it for cheaper than what it's supposedly worth.

I don't know that I'm any better judge than anybody else, but if you want to post photos I'll look at them. One can often obtain older silver coins below catalogue value, sometimes below bullion.
