My father gave me his mint bag of 1963 pennies for my birthday, it's unopened and in decent shape. First off, what's it's value. Second, what is the best way to preserve it for future generations?

Thanks,
Norton

I think, and think being the key word here, that the value would be at least 10 cents for each. As for preservation, I don't have any great advice except for putting them in 2X2's to prevent further dings to each other.

The mint bag intact would be more valuable than the pennies preserved individually. Air and moisture can still permeate the canvas bag, so if you intend to keep it intact, use a vacuum packer to the remove air and seal the bag. With the air removed, it will also freeze the coins inplace so that contact marks would be kept to a minimum. Try to get as much air out as possible. You will be preserving a piece of history! Good luck!

If you have no intentions of ever opening it, you really don't have to do anything with it except keeping it out of reach of moisture. It has survived 44 years so far, so just keep doing what you have been doing.

Thanks guys,
I have no intention of ever opening the bag, I just want it to exist for as long as possible. You know, give it to the grandkids ect. I guess I have to move it one more time, into the footlocker. Thanks guys

I agree I wouldn't do anything to preserve it instead of keeping it sealed just like it was when it came from the mint, because to me (not being a cent collector) the sewn mint bag is atleast half the value of the item and if it were opened I wouldn't even be interested in the item but may purchase such an item just because of its preservation all these years. But like I said I don't collect Lincoln cents so its the history I would be buying not the coins

I admire your restraint !! If the bag were in my house it would be opened in a heart beat !!

I can't help visualizing a hand full of MS-67 and better 1963 Lincoln cents !!

the bag of course holds some history ,, I'm not sure what exactly it would be tied to other than a date and event distantly related in a round about sort of way .

at this point you have no way of knowing how the coins inside have fared in the 40 + years since they were minted .

I just thought I would give you the perspective from a Lincoln fanatics point of view !!

That's a nice birthday present !!
