Hello All,
I inherited these 2 gold coins from my girlfirends aunt who in turn had inherited from her father, Her aunt is 73 years old and her dad had these since he was young. I took them to a local coin dealer who offered me $256.00 canadian for the DEL Gratia, and he said the other Half Eagle was counterfiet although it is still gold. he was not sure of the grade. He sent pics off to a friend for further investigation.
He wants to buy everything I have for it's metal value only. I have a lot of silver too. Although I am selling no matter what, I want to get the best price. Sorry for the canadian coin in the US area of the forum.

Is there a limitation to how many pics I can upload? Just joined today. My apologies for the ignorance.

Why did he say it was counterfeit? What's his reasoning?

No kind of gold expert here but what did the dealer see with the Half Eagle that made him think counterfeit?

He said there was a small crack on th outside of the coin that made it look like it was cast. Even when I looked through his glass I could not see it.

Cant say for sure with these pics but it does not look cast to me. A weak strike and some wear maybe...

Any input would be greatly appreciated. The platinum is perfect, still has the dull sheen with a high gloss queen on the back.

This is only a portion of what was given to me, then I had my own collection as well. It is super hard to organize it. I am just really looking to sell the 2 gold and maybe the platinum coins.

$30 for all that silver? Buy a coin book! Don't do it! What years are your quarters? (Using the almighty automobile analogy, if a person told you the make and model or their car it wouldn't tell you anything about that specific car because you haven't seen how the car runs.)

That Half Eagle business seems sketchy to me because it seems like he's trying to get the coin for metal value (as stated) then giving a "reason" to not pay you full value. So it would be best if you gave us pictures of both sides of the coins because a coin's year can make it be worth much more than its intrinsic or face value. Think about this: why would a counterfeiter use real gold to fake that coin? Because a real one must have numismatic value, otherwise the forgery is a waste of time and resources.

Spot price for platinum is Bid: 1434 Ask: 1444 (www.kitco.com/market). So 10% of that is around $143-4. Use your own judgment if you want to sell it for $114. He has to make a profit but platinum is a rare commodity.

Best advice: get clear pictures of your coins (both sides) and we can further help you grade your coins and give you a better idea of what your coins are worth.

Thanks for the info guys, The golds I see on E-bay are trying for between $400-$500 each. I would sell there but I have like 3 positive ratings for buying, none for selling. So odds are I would not do well there. I will try to borrow a better camera until mine comes in and get a few picks of the older silvers, I thought I had a Small Bead 1966 Silver canadian dollar but turns out it is the large bead. :(
