Please forgive this post if I put it in the wrong Forum. This is only my second post on CoinCommunity.com.

I opened a small white envelop in an inherited box of coins and paper money and found 5 â€" 1976 Two Dollar Bills (crisp and in brand new condition). Each $2.00 has a 13 cent USPS stamp attached that appears to have been hand cancelled on April 13th, 1976 PM at a post office near my childhood home.

What do I have here?
Could anyone please provide a link that discusses this 1976 $2.00 configuration?

Hoping not to offend anyone with this nubee question.

Hi bmachia,
These bills were issued in 1976 in memory of the 200 years independence.
They replaced the United States Red Seal $2 with the Monticello back.
It was the first series of the modern Size Bills, which again had Trumballs "Signing of the Declaration of Independence" on the reverse.
I think one of them is round about $5-10 $ worth.
I hope that helps...

great information hajduk but I think these notes are $5 at tops. There is just so many out there with the first day of issue stamps, you need to have all 50 to get close to $10 a note.

Than You very much folks! This is extermely helpful.

When I get home this evening, I need to check for consecutive serial numbers.

If all 5 have consecutive serials, how does that apply to value?

Thx

to CCF. Look here for values http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...old=1&rt=nc, you can't retire but not a bad profit.

Certain postal cancellations can add a bit of value, say one cancelled at Monticello or Independence Hall in Philadelphia. April 13, 1976 was the first day of issue for the then-new 1976 series $2s so that is why you will see that particular date. As for mine, it was cancelled at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, aka The Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

Considering I just sold 2 regular $1 bills with consecutive serial numbers starting with 6000 for $10 when I listed then as a lark at Bidstart I would think that 5 consecutive $2 bills with First Day of Issue stamps and cancellation would do pretty well.
