Spotted this tiny AE4, and inspired by talk of crosses on the boards, took the plunge. Spent ages on wildwinds, but can't find a match. It doesn't help that the edge of the coin has probably gone. There is no sign of a wreath around the cross. The coin looks better in the hand.

Theodosius-II

Theodosius-II

Do you think Theo II is correct?

I believe I see ANT (or Gamma), so mint of Antioch. With this I did some looking, and if its a wreath surrounding the cross, its either Theo II (more likely) or Marcian (rare type for this emperor). I think I see the legend CONCORDIA AVGGG though, surrounding the cross; if that's the case, either Arcadius or Honorius.

Is it in hand? A better photo of the reverse would help in narrowing it down.

Its Arcadius or Honorius, its Antioch. If you want a later one (Theodosius II), I happen to have one.

Ben can you email me a pic of your theo?

It does say ANT as far as I can see. I cant see any sign of a wreath around the cross. Can't find this sort of cross on any of the Marcian coins.

The face is quite clear in hand, but it might have been silvered and part of the layer has come off, the photo of the obv looks different on the screen. Doesn't help does it.

I wonder if there is no wreath, could it be Byzantine. Maybe a nummus of some sort? Ski, care to comment?

At first I thought Theo II, but looking at the coin more I'm not so sure. The Cross reverse would suggest him , but I cant tell if there is a wreath or legend around the cross. Also looking at the mint mark it does seem to be Antioch. A closer look though I think I see an S before what might be the letter A and the N looks more like an M to me. I don't think it's Byzantine. Without having the coin in hand I can't be sure who it is.

Off to the British Museum with it then. Ben wasn't that impressed with them, but we will see. I will report back in a couple of weeks.

Eddop gave a good link. There you can see that there is nothing to distinguish Honorius, Arcadius, and Theodosius II except the obverse legend. The legend would begin "DN ..." and if the next letter is H, A, or T you can tell who it is. I can't see enough of the obverse legend to choose between them.
