I recently purchased a couple rolls from an ebay seller who advertised OBW rolls of 1969 S Lincoln cents. I received the rolls and they certainly seem to be bright red BU's. But...About 90% of them have very poor obverse surfaces, with gouges, severe bags marks, and heavy, spotty staining. (The reverse is usually better on most of the coins. Overall,I don't know if I found anything better than an MS64, with most of them lucky to come in at MS 62 or MS 63.

Question is...Is this to be expected with this year/date/mintmark, or are these possibly pre-searched and re-rolled?

99% of unsearched lots on ebay have been searched many times. Its a gimmick.

Thanks. Amazing, that people will go to so much trouble re-wrapping cents just to make $10 or so per roll. So the next question would be, are there reliable on-line Internet sources from which to buy genuine, never -been -opened rolls?

It really depends on your budget, and also the years you are looking for.

I suggest looking for a dealer online that has the PNG logo on their site. They are supposed to be ethical and some have an incredible amount of coins in stock.

But I agree with the others, the older coins you look for the higher the chance that the coins have been searched many times over. The only caveat to that might be extremely tight shotgun rolls with no damage to the end of the rolls at all.

If your looking for any rolls, the US Mint sells current year coinage at pretty reasonable prices. Look through a couple of rolls, save what you want and bring the rest to the bank.

Thanks. Knowing to look for the PNG logo is a great suggestion.
