Hello guys, Bought my first Vespasian coin on ebay. The coin had no description but its clear its vespasian. Not really expensive, € 10,5 excl shipping! With a little bit of cleaning it will look good I hope! Edited by Dutchgulden 08/10/2013 5:48 pm

Yes that is indeed Vespasian ! Sometimes some ebay sellers will confuse him with Titus (family resemblance) with the important difference in the legend being the letter T after IMP. Not the best one I have seen but at that price you can't be too fussy

Not a bad coin. Glad you found a real one.

The pictures look OK, style OK. For 10.5 Euros, the price is OK as well. At that price, worth the risk. Have a close look at the edges with a high power loupe, looking specifically at the edge splits. With a struck coin, the inside surfaces of the splits should be quite rough, indicating metal stress.
Another simple test is to try and bend it with your fingers. From my experience, about 1 in 200 ancient 'coins' fail this test. The colour of the pictures in this case prompted me to ask for this test.
It would be prudent to check the weight. I do that with ALL ancient coins, suspect or not.

Thanks guys, the weight seems to be right: 3,12 grams but of course I will check the coin when it arrives. What would you do: clean it with lemon juice or leave it in its present state?

I would be very much more tempted to leave this coin alone, rather than to try to improve it's appearance in ANY way. I think that the chances of making it worse far outweigh the chances of improving it.

The cost of a coin includes shipping. A coin priced at $5 with $9 shipping from Europe is not cheaper than a $8 coin with $2 shipping. Cost is important and those of us who decide to mention the price of a coin would do a service by actually giving the full, true, cost.

What you forget augustus is that sometimes you can combine shippings so the shipping costs are not always the same! In this case I can spread it out over 2 coins so its 2,50 per coin.. in my previous post did I always mention incl shipping fyi

Well, Dutch, 13 euros for a Vespasian denarius is a very good price. It has a good portrait with character. I, too, sometimes spread shipping over two or more coins.

Despite my comments, I think that you have improved the appearance of this coin. How did you go about cleaning it?
