I don't hold out much hope for this.

It is 14mm at its widest, probably was larger at one time.

On the reverse the bottom line could read AAAB.

Seem to be able to see an eye on the obv, could it be barbarian?

I am thinking Justinian I. A quick look at Wildwinds and I see some similar type small AE.

It is indeed Byzantine. Mintmark ALEB or something similar (maybe ALEZ), denomination I+B, one of the peculiarly Egyptian denominations, the dodecanummium (12 nummi). Not entirely unlike this Wildwinds example of Justinian I. I can't ID the emperor; the type was issued from Justinian through to Heraclius, I believe.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Thanks Sap. Didn't understand a word of that except for "I can't ID the the emperor..."!

It is Ben's problem now!
