Well, I'm pretty stoked

The stars side has no rays and is half-covered with weird damage (it looks crumpled). The shield side is probably a solid AG - the date has only the top readable. It's 187(number with a loop on top). Hopefully I can get pictures soon - apparently all 1870s shields are harder dates, so I'm hoping a full dating can be made.

This is my first-ever Shield nickel, so I'm pretty happy I got it for less than a quarter!

My bet is on 1870, 1872 or 1873. Whichever one it turns out to be (or even better, if it turns out to be one of the rarer 1870s dates), it's still a great deal at the price you paid.

I gave it the Dadi treatment (ultrasonic cleaning), and took better pictures when the sun came up more:

I also tried to use advanced photo-editing technology to bring out the date, but alack! It's worse than in hand.

You could try Nic-A-Date for a chance to see the date.

I've used strong vinegar in the past. That's how I revealed a 1925 successfully (which immediately went in my Canadian nickel album as a placeholder).
