This coin has definitely not been cleaned. I recently got a number of them from an elderly American living here in Canada who was downsizing and clearing out some of his stuff. He told me these had been in his safety deposit box since 1972 and have only recently seen the light of day.

Well, that covers all but the first 89 years of the coin's existence.

Seriously, I think the opinion is based on the "halo" effect noticeable around some of the letters, most obviously on the UM of UNUM. That's a strong sign of polishing. However, it's also an effect which is possible during circulation, and on-camera it won't look much different.

That's true, I don't know what happened to it pre 1972.

I was going to ask that myself when looking at the coin, if it had been cleaned. I am just saying because I have a couple polished V nickels from a large lot that have similar looking surfaces.

And yes, I forgot to add to my previous post that it appears to have been polished/cleaned. Better photos would be needed for me to say for certain.
