Whilst one of my collecting themes is the eastern denarii of Septimius Severus I don't really collect his later eastern issues. I have several examples from these issues but they aren't something I go after in general. This is the sort of thing I usually go for, which arrived this week:- Septimius Severus denarius Obv:- [L SEPT SEV P]-ERTE AVG IMP II, Laureate head right Rev:- BONA SPES, Spes walking left, holding flower and raising hem of skirt Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare, A.D. 194 References:- BMCRE 425. RIC 444b. RSC 57a These are often on tight flans of off-centre strikes but they are what I collect and are not well represented in the primary references. I do deviate into the later issues on the odd occasion but I try not to collect duplicates. I have failed with regards to this rule recently and have bought a few later Laodicea issues that I already have examples of. Both the following coins have the same ids. I bought the first one about a year and a half ago. The second coin arrived this week. I justified the purchase with "It's got a lovely large flan, well centred strike and decent grade. and the legend breaks are quite different". Septimius Severus denarius Obv:- " L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX, Laureate head right Rev:- " P MAX TR P VIII COS II P P, Fides standing left, basket of fruit in right, two heads of grain in left Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare A.D. 198 - " A.D. 202 Reference:- " RIC 511a. RSC 455. First example Most recent addition I have come to the conlusion that I not longer have a collection. It seems to be turning into a hoard. I will bore you with more of my recent purchases shortly. Martin Edited by maridvnvm 08/17/2013 07:08 am

I don't generally buy Rome mint coins of Septimius Severus unless I find something odd like an IMP II denarius or a mule. I did deviate from this this week in that I bought a Rome mint Sestertius. Septimius Severus Sestertius Obv:- L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X, Laureate head right Rev:- P M TR P V COS II P P, S-C, Genius, naked, standing front, head left, sacrificing out of patera in right hand over lighted, garlanded altar left and golding two corn ears downwards in left hand Minted in Rome A.D 197. Reference:- RIC 743 (Rated Scarce). BMCRE 621 (same reverse die). Cohen 441 The IMP X issue is relatively common but slightly scarcer than the earlier ones. This reverse seems slightly scarcer and the only examples I have been able to find all come from the same reverse die. For some reason I couldn't walk away from it. Martin

I do actively collect the Alexandria coins of Septimius Severus. I am actively looking for scarcer types but cannot walk past a coin type that I already have that has been mis-attributed or un-attributed by a dealer when the price is right. The following two coins fall into this category. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:â€" IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG, Laureate head right Rev:â€" APOLLINI AVGVSTO, Apollo standing left, patera in right hand, lyre in left Minted in Alexandria. A.D. 194 Ref:â€" RIC 345 Even though the flan is small and half the legend is lost on both side this coin is better than most examples I see of the type. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:â€" IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG, Laureate head right Rev:â€" AEQVITAS II, Aequitas standing left, holding scales in right hand, cornucopiae in left Minted in Alexandria, A.D. 194 References:â€" RIC 344 (Rare), BMCRE 319, RSC 18 This one was just too cheap to pass by. My hoarding has continued with my other Severan mint of Emesa. This COS II - VICTOR SEVER AVG coin is nothing special in itself. I have a couple of others and this is a different reverse die with a different reverse legend break to my other examples. What appealed to me was this it is an obverse die match to some of my other coins. Here is my new coin. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:â€" IMP CAE L SEP SE-V PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right Rev:â€" VICTOR S-EV-ER AVG, Victory walking left, holding wreath in right hand, palm in left Minted in Emesa. Early A.D. 194 Reference:â€" BMCRE 399. RIC IV 428 (S). RSC 749 and the obverse die match Septimius Severus denarius Obv:â€" IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right Rev:â€" MONET AVG, Moneta seated left, holding scales and cornucopiae Minted in Emesa, A.D. 194 - 195 References:â€" RIC -, RSC -, BMCRE - The hoard grows deeper....

Very interesting Martin and excellent coins. Have you seen the recent post by rjscoin? He has an interesting Septimius that I haven't be able to attribute other than its from Laodikeia ad Mare. I would like your opinion on that coin.

Julia Domna denarius Obv:â€" IVLIA DOMNA AVG, Draped bust right Rev:â€" VENE-R VICT, Venus standing left, holding apple in right hand, sceptre in left Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare, A.D. 195 References:â€" BMCRE 422, RIC 630, RSC 188a

Just in case you get the wrong idea and assume that all I buy is Severans, here is an example of my non-Severan buying this month. Constantine the Great Ae Follis Obv:â€" IMP C CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:â€" GENIO POP ROM, Genius standing left before lighted altar in turreted crown, left shoulder & loins draped, holding patera & cornucopia. Minted in Lugdunum (//PLC) Reference:â€" RIC VI Lugdunum 255. Bastien XI 470

I am glad that some people seem to like them because I know that my coin tastes are quite differen to the majority of members here. I have been on a bit of s spending spree having been holding tight on to the reigns for a couple of months. I am not waiting for another 10 coins to arrive this week. I will post some when they arrive.

I haven't shared everything from this week. I did't think that these Hadrian denarii were worthy of sharing. Hadrian Denarius Obv:- HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, bare head right Rev:- PIETAS AVG, Pietas standing left, hands raised, altar at foot Rome Mint. Reference:- RIC 257, RSC 1028, BMC 685 Hadrian Denarius Obv:- IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, laureate head right Rev:- P M TR P COS III, Victory flying right with trophy Rome Mint. Reference:- RIC 101, RSC 1132, BMC 215 I do have some better Hadrians on the way....
