I have submitted before to NGC using UPS/FedEx accounts. My question is, if I use NGC's default shipping via USPS and pay them for shipping, it appears the only option is via registered mail (which is fine), but is it First Class? Priority? etc. As you can have registered mail in just about any flavor. Anyone know? They do not state (not that I found).

PCGS used the flat rate priority boxes, I'm guess NGC would do the same. The insurance is the killer, its not cheap on Priority mail and they dont switch it over to express mail even when it would become cheaper that way if the insurance is high enough.

@Basebal21 - Your spot on, its the killer insurance... I just ran the calculator at Priority Registered and my insured amount and its within 2-3 bucks. Rest for "handling" and it pretty much adds up.

It really is brutal. I think somewhere between 500-1k it becomes cheaper for a flat rate express with the insurance. If its really close Id rather just pay a dollar or two more and get it back the next day anyway. I'm not sure why they dont offer it as an option when you can end up paying 30+ dollars for a priority box

I was wondering this myself. Submitting 1 coin and paying the $24 min USPS shipping charge is tough to swallow, especially for a $150 coin. I was curious if its cheaper to set up the FedEx UPS account and go that route.

I would highly recommend you wait until you get a couple more coins. The first coin is going to cover most of the fees with it, you can add 2 or 3 more for the price of the first one alone considering shipping both ways usually.

The more coins you submit the cheaper the shipping per coin.

I believe Registered is first class up to 13 oz, over 13 oz it has to go as Priority. It doesn't really matter though since there is no difference in the speed of the shipping. Registered Priority will not travel any faster than Registered First Class. Registered is registered.

And once the package is valued over about $900, Registered is cheaper than insured because the insurance rates for registered mail are much lower. And if the package is worth more than $5,000 you need to send it registered because registered can be insured to $25K, all other forms of USPS shipping max out at $5K.

Express and overnight will get you coins back faster, but they are expensive, and have maximum coverage of $5K.
