This is nice. The really late are often really bland and regular designs.

What do you think to the price though Ben? I have a good budget but don't want to pay over the odds. I also quite like the coin in the link.

Gold is beautiful but you almost always pay a premium for the nice ones. If you are willing to spend that kind of change for a coin of Honorius why not compare what that might get you for a denarius of Caesar or a big bronze of the 'handsome' Nero sneering with grungy beard ? Gold is very pretty but bronze ......... Is beautiful !

Do you have your heart set on Roman gold? You could get a few Byzantine golds for the price of that little Roman. Or how about a nice Greek, like this Macedon Alexander the Great with Athena and Nike? You might be able to get a coin like this for significantly less than the ebay coin, and IMHO it's far more beautiful, and twice the weight: It's from an upcoming auction by Gitbud & Naumann (Germany) via Pecunem. Here is a link, and I put it to a page which lists all of their gold lots: https://www.pecunem.com/search/auction-7?q=goldI've purchased several lots from G&N lately (via Pecunem) and have done very well, price-wise. Most coins seem to go for significantly more than the estimate but still less than average 'retail'. Their buyer's fees are low and the shipping is super duper quick. Very happy customer here. A helpful site for scouting upcoming auctions is Sixbid. Not all of the auctions listed are for ancient coins and at the moment there are a large number of auctions for other stuff, but you'll figure that out. You can search for certain coins or types directly from that site. You can track coins from that site. When it comes time for actual bidding, you typically do that through the auction house though. Or at least that's been my experience so far. Just hit another auction tonight :) Good luck, keep us posted as to gold coins that catch your eye. We want to see them and cheer from the peanut gallery!

Can't help but show off, but I can't miss an opportunity to post my only gold ancient (technically early medieval) coin, a tremissis of Byzantine emperor Anastasius: Obv: DN ANASTA-SIVS PP AVG, pearl-diademed, draped bust right Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, Victory advancing right with head left, holding wreath and cross on globe, CONOB in ex, Constantinople mint Ref: SB 8 16 mm, 1.5 gr .jpg) Don't know your budget or your exact preferences (at least something as big as a solidus?), but you could get a tremissis, which are kind of small but usually go for less than $500 for common ones (mine was almost $300)

Wow, there are certainly some very nice coins around.... I don't really have a set budget as long as It's a coin I like that is genuine and more importantly to me, something that I can fully research - not just the coin but gather info on the place it was made and gather info and pictures of ruins from said place. On that auction site there are quite a few Republican coins that I like but again this is a totally new area for me. I will post pictures of anything I like the look of and let you all advise me

Fantastic tremissis ValiantKnight. Metdet, I don't think the price for the solidus is that bad considering its extremely fine and retail. I agree with ThisIsFun though that you would prob find a better bargain at auction though maybe you could make the guy on ebay an offer? I'm going to have to check GN out myself now, some really special pieces on that link but I'm guessing the estimates on most of them are low to encourage bidding and the majority will sell for significantly more. I have a solidus of honorius that I paid £450 for retail a year or so ago. It's only really a VF though and it's a different obverse and reverse. I'm away from home but will post up a pic tomorrow for comparison if I get a chance.
