Just when you thought the ancient coins of India couldn't get any stranger they just did. I really have no background to give on this coin, and I know very little about the period. If anyone can give a little history surrounding this piece I surely would love to hear it.

I was able to find only a few images of this coin type online, and there were two for sale of which I bought one of them. The coin is supposedly pretty rare, and difficult to come by.

My particular piece does not seem to have a spot of corrosion on it and exhibits a rather rich yellow color. I would chalk this up to toning, but the coin seems to be heavy for its size, so I suspect it might be alloyed with at least some quantity of gold.

India, Jammu mint
Chauhans of Ranastambhapura
AR Drachm struck c.1275 AD
13.7 mm x 4.47 g
Obv. Lion standing left within double dot border.
Rev. Within circle of dots, three line Devangari legend- JAI/TA SI DE/VA sun and moon flanking the letter on the third line
ref: Deyell 366

If anyone can add something I would appreciate it.

" The Chauhans were also known as the Chahomaras, who had ruled the same region for over 1,000 years, off and on"
'Glimpses of History', (*illustrated with coins), by Brian Hannon.
* = my words.

For futher research, I would Google "Chauhans of Ranastambhapura", and see what you get.

Read carefully with a pen in your hand and note down salient points, so that you may Google further.

Let us know what you find out!

Another interesting coin!

You probably already saw the following information, unless it wasn't you who bought this coin from an eBayer in May...

"According to the Rajput bards, Chauhan is one of the four Agnikula or 'fire sprung' clans, deriving their origin from a sacrificial fire-pit (agnikunda) at Mount Abu to fight against the Asuras or demons. Chauhan is also one of the 36 ruling races of the Rajputs. Agnikula origin was perpetuated by later manuscripts of Raso from the 16th century onwards. James tod was of the view that Chauhans were the most valiant of the Agnikulas. According a number of scholars Chauhans were originally Gurjaras and Chauhan was prominent clan of the Gujjars (or Gurjars)."

As for the metal content, the others of this type I saw online (currently for sale, previously sold, or not for sale) were all listed as silver and all looked like silver. Some were obviously cleaned. The light gold hue of your coin is probably from patination. I have a bunch of fine silver at home (I like to make things...) and in my climate it develops first a light gold-ish patina, rather like the color of tobacco stains, sometimes progressing to a dark color over time if not cleaned. I'm guessing your coins is fine silver.

Edit:

Additional info from that old listing:
"AR drachm of Jaitra Simha"
"This type has been incorrectly attributed by Mitchiner to the Pallava king Narasimha (see MNI 696). These coins are quite rare."

I did not buy it from ebay, but I did get it from "my dude" who runs several ebay stores. I do have a copy of the TIF quote, regarding origin.

TIF- Interesting take on the tarnish. I have many silver pieces but none quite like this. I think your "tobacco stain" best describes the appearance. This must have been recovered or at least kept in a humid environment more so then mine for quite sometime. I have no desire to clean as it has a rather appealing appearance.

Chris-I have a side shot the will answer your question, the shape of the coin has a lot to do with why I bought this one, it kinda looks like a tiny Big Mac from the side. yum.

Sel- I will check out that book.

Ski- Thanks for the email- I am working on getting the paper.

All- I appreciate all of you who came out to make comment on my coin, and did a lot of googling and other research on my piece. You guys are truly a valuable asset and have very much contributed to the love I have for the hobby. Kudos to all my friend near and far. I hope you enjoyed looking at this piece as much as I have.
