Not Augustus, looks like Claudius to me. The face looks 'enhanced' to me too but others may disagree.

Looks to be Claudius, definitely not Augustus. And I agree...looks a little fishy. Original coin but enhanced I think. Which doesn't bother me at all.

I don't think it has been 'enhanced'. It is a common type of Claudius As with Minerva reverse. I have seen VF/EF go for between $70 - 80. Surprisingly this is about the same they went for 30 years ago ! In this condition I would not pay more than $20 ..... Even that might be high

I think it is the front of the face that is throwing me off. The brow line to the eyes looks downright young compared to other examples of this type. The mouth also doesn't look exactly right either to me. But I would trust FR, his old eyes (yeah I went there :P) have seen probably more ancients in his lifetime than I have seen modern coins in mine.

The 'Spanish' mints which had operated since the Republican period ceased minting provincial coinage by the time of Claudius. Instead they began issuing regular Roman bronze coinage. I believe this As is probably minted in Hispania.

Ten euros is a very 'good' price. Claudius AE's are still relatively inexpensive and have moved little in price in the past 25 years. In fact they seem to be more plentiful than ever ! I bought this one long ago for $100 ... They are still available in this range. A rather youthful and handsome depiction of Claudius rather than the drooling old man depicted on others.

FR - what happened to your wonderful red background? Did your son need his pillowcase back?

Red backround hit the laundry. Getting tired of it anyway. My 14 year old had a pair of black jeans folded nearby. Use what you have ! I rather like my Claudius Asses but 'Dutch' considering the numbers of coins you have been acquiring lately I think you could take a few weeks to search for one nice Claudius. Of all the Julio-Claudians his coins are still fairly reasonable. Augustus Tiberius Caligula and Nero are pretty sky high in VF/EF. But with patience and enough time (it is like fishing) you could land one for under $125. Which if you add up all the $30 coins you have bought in the past month isn't too bad at all !
